The Brad Richter Solo Collection (Solo, 2005)
A Whisper in the Desert– Like so many of Brad’s pieces, A Whisper in the Desert has a large and varied timbral palette and reveals several new extended techniques that help evoke its program. Here, however, the tonal language is decidedly more dissonant, with the exception of ‘Starry Night on the Beach with Federales,’ which has a decidedly Mexican flair and enough flash and speed to keep the most agile players busy. Whisper is an homage to the Sonoran Desert where Brad lives, and much of the music was written outdoors in the scenery the piece describes.
Three Little Nightmares– These fun pieces are both highly contemporary and accessible, using a variety of prepared guitar techniques to evoke their somewhat tongue-in-cheek titles: ‘Clock Strikes Midnight,’ ‘Stepping on a Spider,’ ‘I Felt a Funeral in my Brain.’
Angular Tango- One of Brad’s lesser-known pieces, this hidden gem may be among his most thoughtful and well-developed compositions.
Hard Times Come Again No More– This is an arrangement of the Civil War Era Stephen Foster song. Foster’s haunting melody and folksy harmonies by beautifully on the guitar.
