Devil in the Details (Solo, 2012)
As performed by Bokyung Byun ›
Devil in the Details is a three-movement suite for solo guitar inspired by the life and music of three great musicians who, as the New Encyclopedia of Music and Musicians put it when referring to Niccola Paganini, “created the uncanny impression that they were in league with the ‘Evil One.'”
Jimmy Page of the rock band Led Zeppelin, Orpheus of Greek mythology, and Niccolo Paganini, the legendary Italian violin virtuoso, all had connections to the underworld, black magic, or Satan himself. All of these connections, of course, were completely imagined. In the case of Jimmy Page and perhaps also Paganini, this perception of a connection to the dark arts was encouraged, and the mystery it created around their celebrity image may have propelled them to even greater heights of superstardom. Devil in the Details, The ‘Dark Page’ and ‘Inferno’ in particular, has fun with this image and pays homage to the great musicians behind the intrigue.
